“Who hasn’t seen bulls in El Puerto does not know what a day of bullfighting is”.
This mythical phrase of Joselito ‘El Gallo’, pronounced in a chatting after a bullfight in San Sebastián back in 1916, sums up perfectly the feel of this bullring. In fact, in the commemoration of its century was reflected in a mosaic of tiles placed at the main entrance.
The bullring of El Puerto was inaugurated on June 5 and 6, 1880 with a double bullfight where Antonio Carmona ‘Gordito’, from Seville, and the Rafael Molina ‘Lagartijo’, from Córdoba, fought bulls from Anastasio Martín and Saltillo. The project was a work of Mariano Carderera and Manuel Pardo, and its execution was carried out by a company formed by a group of illustrious people who were presided by D. Tomás Osborne Böhl de Faber.
But yet in the s. XVIII were celebrated bullfights in the Place of the Galeras, conditioned for it, and that was the anteceden of the wooden bullrings that were built in the same place in which today is this arena, considered one of the most beautiful of Spain.
It is a polygonal plant building with 60 sides, 99 meters in diameter, three floors and a 60 meter ring, one of the largest. It has capacity for more than 12,000 people.
Best bullfighters have historically fought in El Puerto and this has been conserved over time.
